How we work, initial charge
We've organized our firm to deliver wills and trusts in a plain English way - and timely, cost effective, and focused.
This book was a big influence on Joel Bernstein, the principal of the firm.
By Joel Bernstein
"I consider myself to be a writer who typically works like this:
During this process we touch on several topics. It is that discussion that I feel is at the heart of what I do.
Central to the process is communication. This time uninterrupted focus between you and me. Focus is more important that simply time spent together.
We’ll start with:
An initial 'plain English' session
Your initial meeting will be with me. It will be quiet and confidential, and not with a junior attorney.
Conference room: No phones or computers
The initial meeting has two main purposes
I'll listen to you. And then ask some questions. And then generally explain my thinking, using the perspective I've developed over about 25+ years in this field.
We charge $150 for this session. We charge for three reasons:
In sum, I'll assess your personal and financial situation and outline your estate planning choices.
Our approach to ongoing communication
If we decide to work together, you'll sign documents about 3-4 weeks after the meeting. But we continue to communicate with clients after that.
For many years, we’ve updated our clients twice a year by a reminder letter. That letter mentions big law changes and also reminds people of life events that can affect estate planning.
Clients appreciate this approach and we are proud of this effort.
When was the last time your estate planning attorney communicated with you? For almost all clients, it is a new experience.
When a person passes and there's a will involved, it goes through the probate court process. If a trust is involved, we call it post death administration.
Actually, we call it all post death administration. Because it may involve many type of assets, including real estate, retirement accounts, life insurance, pensions, and other property."
